He took a liking to me from the start and would sit on my knee and come up to me at the table. When I next arrived to stay in Coatesville in 2010, he was pleased to see me and had not forgotten me. Likewise the last time I saw him in 2014. What a dear little dog!
Sadly he has passed away. Goodbye old pal!
He was a great gardener and loved the New Zealand native bush. He always found walking in the bush a source of peace as well as energy. Some Mondays he would go to the wetlands in Pauatahanui to plant fledgling trees with the Forest and Bird Society people. He planted all the native plants and trees here at 117 Holborn Drive in the fenced off area. Bindi, my cat loves to look over the area from the garden shed roof.
Pat had a vegetable garden of his own and grew such vegetables as carrots, parsnips, courgettes, turnips, pumpkin, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, beans, silver beet, spinach and tomatoes. One year he grew quinoa and amaranth. He did not realise how tall they would grow!!
Sweet red clover and pink-tipped daisies, purple vetch and cow parsley.
See the teacher graciously receiving the bouquet.
She puts them on the window-sill in a crystal vase.

Now the boy with his twin sister is on his way home.
He boards the bus clutching the penny fare in his little hand.
They mount the steps to the top of the double -decker bus.
From there they can look down to the stream by the mill
And the tops of the trees as they pass through the wood.
Walking from the bus stop, there is time to gather flowers for mother.

After tea, the little boy makes his way to the stream with his big sister.
He carries in each hand a jam jar with a string handle.
Excitedly he dips each jar into the stream and waits patiently.
Meanwhile it is growing dark and the midges are beginning to bite.
From across the stream mother's voice is heard calling them in.
Time to return home across the bridge with his precious catch of tadpoles.
I had no sooner said yes than this little female Boston Terrier shot past her to lay a ball at my feet. She is called Wheezie because she makes that kind of a noise. She is a very appealing character and had me throwing a tennis ball outside and doing soccer moves indoors.
When we were packing to go up to Maine for a few days, she kept coming and putting her ball inside my bag and looking hopefully at me. She sometimes goes to stay at the house in Maine. but, not this time.
He is old and blind. I met him in 2010.
When I knocked at the door, the four other collies, that I had not met barked but Zac did not. He could pick up my scent through the door and knew me from 2010. I do not play with him, but give him lots of pats and he likes to lie on my feet.
The first dog that befriended me on my 2014 trip, was called Twiglet. She is a dark Lurcher breed of dog and a rescued animal. She is still a pup. There was another Lurcher dog with her called Jazz, but apart from the first night, he didn't want to play. Twiglet had me throwing the plastic ball indoors most of the evening. In the morning she would be waiting at my bedroom door.
My vegetable garden is a wreck. The cauliflowers and broccoli I planted are all eaten by white butterflies and any tomatoes ripening have split. The only good plant is the courgette, which goes on producing flowers and fruit without any water. I tried to pull some carrots last week and they broke halfway so I had to dig them out as the soil is so hard.
It has been so dry here that the weeds on pathways and the scoria around the potagers have died - one good thing about the drought!
I have spring bulbs in the fridge in the meantime. I have not quite decided whether to plant them in the garden or in pots. I shall probably do pots.
I have not written on my blog for some time, but this morning I took out my camera and went for a walk around and into the vegetable garden to pick fruit and vegetables before the rain came. Then I watered the flower box under the eaves at the front of the house. This flower box is a memorial to my cat Beauty who died a year ago. It is the Wildflower Garden.
A few weeks ago as I was getting out of my car a tattered female Monarch Butterfly flew round me and then went over to the Wildflower Garden where I had planted Swan Plants last year. They have been moved over by the garage. She soon found her way to the larger one and stayed a while. After that she circled me again and then flew off up over the house. I think it was the last of the Monarchs I nurtured last year. She pupated in April so I think she wintered over.
I was so excited when I found one on my tiny Swan Plant and I thought it was the only one.
After this one had gone into a chrysalis,

I went out a few days later to look at it and found four more tiny caterpillars on the plant. I almost panicked as I thought of four hungry caterpillars feeding on my small Swan Plant. So off to Mitre Ten I went to buy two more plants to feed my growing family. Now all are doing well and number two went into its chrysalis on Friday. It attached itself to the house. Maybe because it was so windy it didn't trust itself to the Swan Plant.
Two more are getting quite fat and will soon be in their chrysalises. The last one will have no competition for food, but I hope it will have time to develop into a butterfly now that the weather is getting colder.
There is plenty of life in Beauty's Wildflower Garden. With all the rain we have had the plants are luxuriant and starting to show flower buds. Hopefully it will soon be a riot of colour.
Then I looked at the patio. It is down a level from the deck and I never sit down there as it is not private and is overlooked by neighbours. I have an espalier apple tree and red currants and raspberries on one side. My herbs are in the potagers and in pots about the gardens so I won't need to buy many new ones, I can transplant these.
I began by taking up tiles and as they had been laid like bricks they made a pattern I noticed.
FIRST DAY:
Took up tiles to form a wide rectangle. This was not on the original plan, but worked better than the diamond shape. Made an urn feature and glass beads. Planted two miniature roses, lavender, geranium and lemon verbena.
Started to take up tiles for second bed. Decided to make pathways two tile widths. Forgot about plan!
Then I took out my camera and had a look round to photograph the garden before I start replanting herbs out of the potagers. I also looked at the newly planted Beauty's Wildflower Garden and there I spied a Monarch Caterpillar on the tiny Swan Plant. I hope its mother knew what it was doing as the plant is very small.
She passed away on Monday 16 January 2012.
She was one of two in the litter, born about the 19 October 1996. Her mother left her and her sibling on the backdoor step of my friend Margaret's house. Margaret invited me to take one of the kittens and my niece Sarah and I selected Beauty.
I already had a four year old cat called Fern. She took to Beauty immediately and treated her as her baby.
At that time we were living in an upstairs flat in Kingston, Wellington.
At Christmas 1996, Sarah looked after her while I went on holiday. After that she and Fern always stayed at Maria's Cattery in Strathmore. She never trusted Mary and Neil and was always grumpy at the cattery. While Fern was alive, she used to stay in a caravan and liked that.
She was a one person cat.
She loved the second home in Karori as we had a large lawn and a stand of native bush. She disappeared into this for a few days after we moved and I thought we had lost her. She returned at one o'clock in the morning and me and Fern fell on her.

When I sold the house in Karori, we lived in a flat in Northland, which was tough on the cats as there was no land and no territory for them. They were both very pleased when we moved to Stokes Valley.
Fern passed away after we had been here for only a year. Beauty mourned her for some time. I didn't get another cat to replace her as I didn't think Beauty would take to another cat. So she was the last of my cats.
Just over four years ago, I established a Meditation Group at my home on Friday nights and Beauty always meditated with us, sitting along side one of the group. Each day in the morning and evening she would sit with me.
As she got older she darkened in colouring and slept a lot. About four months ago she began to lose weight and sleep a lot. She would curl up with the Paddington Bear my mother made in the library.
They lived up on the moors in a semi detached house. To accommodate us children, a wooden wardrobe in my grandparents room was tipped over on its back and a roomy bed was made for us inside it.
When we were snuggled down in bed, John thought it would be a good idea if we tried to stay awake to see Father Christmas come with the presents. I think he was a bit worried about him finding us as we weren't in our own house. Just before the candle was blown out Grandddad came to say goodnight and he gave us both a teaspoon of rum. Because we follow the Northern Hemisphere and our ancestors, we have Christmas tied to our Summer Holidays, which now actually do not take place during the hottest month in New Zealand. Certainly in Wellington, nothing hots up here till late January and the children are cooped up in classrooms during the hottest month of February.
Of course you can't start school later because soon it would be Easter! And there is another problem. Isn't Easter about celebrating the Resurrection and new life? Here in New Zealand creation is not resurrecting after the cold winter in late March or April. Nor are new lives being born in the animal kingdom. There aren't any baby chicks and bunnies at this time of the year.
Jesus was not born in the summer. It was winter in the Middle East. We should be celebrating Christmas in late June. Or, whenever we have a lot of snow here. Plum pudding and custard and turkey with roast potatoes would then make sense, not to mention the Figgy Pudding!
The other American adopted celebration of Halloween is also out of kilter. We do not have pumpkins ripe in October here. My seeds are not even up yet. This celebration should be in April.
So how would a Southern calendar look, I wonder.
We would of course start with New Year on 1st January. Then in mid-January we would have the summer holidays. In April, we could celebrate Harvest Festival and at the end of the month Halloween. This would be followed by Christmas in late June. Late July/ August would be the time to celebrate Ash Wednesday and Pancake Tuesday and the weeks of Lent. Then in September, we would celebrate Easter. The church calendar would need to be changed and the whole structure of our society. How exciting!!!Ermarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02786639002505084284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546863995547955526.post-85519043882459610802011-10-19T14:19:00.000-07:002011-10-19T14:19:22.030-07:00MEDITATING

On Tuesday evening I led a three hour seminar on meditation.
There are many types of meditation, both Christian and Eastern. I practice one of each. Cover all bases!
The type of meditation that I practice every day is called Centering Prayer. It is an intention type meditation rather than a concentration form which uses a mantra. It was developed by the Cistercian monks in America, led by Father Thomas Keating. I learnt the method from Cynthia Bourgeault, who learnt from Thomas.
In this kind of prayer the emphasis is on letting go. Thomas very colloquially says it is so easy as all you have to do is sit down and shut up.
Yes, you sit on a comfortable chair that supports your back so you can sit up straight, legs uncrossed and arms resting on knees or your lap and gently close your eyes. You choose a sacred word as symbol of your intention to spend time with the Divine Presence and to leave yourself open to the action of this Divine Presence. You begin by saying this sacred word under your breath. When thoughts have cleared the word will just disappear.
When thoughts or feelings return, you gently let go of them and return to the sacred word. Even if you go to sleep, you just let go of it and return to your sacred word. As you become calmer, you will usually experience more period of union with the Divine Presence in the quiet space.
The sacred word should be just a small one, such as peace, holy, Jesus. It is not used as a mantra, of which you never let go. It is used to bring you back to your original intention to give this time to the Divine Presence and to leave yourself open to his/her action.
This type of letting go meditation will after a time, start to influence your life and you will find yourself being led to let go of past hurts, animosities, impatience and other things.
As the tea ad says,"DO TRY IT!"Ermarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02786639002505084284noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546863995547955526.post-40013081344742514202011-10-14T15:36:00.000-07:002011-10-14T15:36:46.822-07:00A LOT TO WONDER ATThis week has provided a lot of food for thought. Yesterday I read two news items about rugby ( is there any other news other than rugby at present?) In one write up the English team were being investigated with possible suspensions forthcoming for their drunken and other behaviors on tour in New Zealand. While the Welsh team were being criticized because they were supposedly not drinking before the semi-finals this weekend. Can you win?
Then there is the shipping. The Rena it now appears intended to crash into the reef! And the Aratere Ferry has been expensively enlarged and refitted and is still a "Spanish Flea!" There are disgruntled passengers already.
On Wednesday I was in the Lansdowne Gardens in Masterton. I strolled down to the aviaries and at first thought they were unoccupied. They looked somewhat derelict. But as I came nearer, I saw the birds. We go on a lot about zoo animals being properly housed in suitable habitats so how about birds? The cages were not very interesting and looked unkempt. The highlight of the visit was when a cockatiel called out to me,"Hello darling!"
I see though that the long range forecast predicts a fine Labour Weekend.Ermarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02786639002505084284noreply@blogger.com1
